Fellow Athenians!
I would like to take a moment to suggest an education system for our youth. I propose that we appoint and pay teachers for what I would like to call, Young People’s Assemblies. This form of schooling will instill the value of democracy in ALL of Athens’ youth. The youth of Athens is our future! For Athens to thrive as she once did we need to put our efforts in the future of our great city! I emphasize “all of Athens’ youth” because we need to inculcate democracy into the poor, the middle class, and the elite. All classes are citizens who pay a role in the assembly. They need to be educated how to govern Athens because it is their city too and only they can look out for their best interests. We will teach them the importance of equality, justice, and how to look forward and build a stable city which they will love. We will point them in the right direction so that they will not make the same mistakes that we have in the past (or at least those mistakes that we are allowed to teach).
As of now it is the job of the father to educate their children. As we move into the future, this way has become outdated. By having Young People’s Assemblies we are able to better prepare them for the actual assembly that they will be participating in as adults. Even the Socratics should be pleased with this because we are teaching the assembly how to govern from a young age, which is what they will grow up to do. Private schooling has always been for the elite, but that gives them an unfair advantage. By having these Young People’s Assemblies we will be putting the poor on the same playing field as the higher classes. I know that there may be some controversy on what will be taught in these assemblies. I propose that we only teach the necessities, which I believe are how to govern Athens as a democracy. I do not believe that it is imperative that we educate the youth in other fields. The sophists may agree that we should educate the youth in a field that they can excel in as opposed to many other fields such as philosophy and mathematics that they may not need. For the time being I think we should use our resources on what is really important, and that is making sure that our youth can handle the destiny of Athens.
Obviously we need the money to pay these teachers of the Young People’s Assemblies. We are already financially strained so this may be difficult. I propose that we increase taxes on imports. The one drawback may be that it would hurt trade. However this cloud has a silver lining because now I would like to propose that from there we rebuild tribunes to offer the other ports protection. Again this may be hard financially, but in the past people have built their own tribunes. By building your own tribute you are not only helping your city but you are showing your patriotism! If you love Athens than you need to help her rise out of this war on two feet! At this time people should be more patriotic than ever! There can be no in between, you are either a patriot who loves Athens, or you are against us!
This proposal of import tax will help get the money to pay the teachers for the Young People’s Assemblies. As a result to the import tax we will have to rebuild our navy so that we can offer protection to our trade ports. This will help Athens rise back on two feet and back on the path of greatness.
